What Is Benchmark MA.6.DP.1.4?

Students describe the shape and spread of data shown in histograms and line plots, using words like symmetric, skewed, gap, cluster, outlier, and range.

Symmetric: the two sides look about the same. Skewed: the data trail off in a long tail to one side. A cluster is a group of values close together, a gap is an empty interval, and an outlier is a value far from the rest.

Official benchmarkGiven a histogram or line plot within a real-world context, qualitatively describe and interpret the spread and distribution of the data, including any symmetry, skewness, gaps, clusters, outliers and the range.

On the FAST test: part of the Grade 6 reporting category Geometric Reasoning, Data Analysis, and Probability, which is about 25–36% of the test.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Describing a Line Plot

A line plot of goals scored shows most values at 3, 4, and 5, nothing at 6 through 11, and one value at 12. Describe the data.
  1. 1Most of the data are clustered from 3 to 5.
  2. 2There is a gap from 6 to 11.
  3. 312 is far from the rest, so it is an outlier. The range is 12 − 3 = 9.
Answer: Cluster at 3–5, gap from 6 to 11, outlier at 12

Worked Example 2

Describing a Histogram

A histogram of minutes spent reading has tall bars on the left that get shorter to the right. Describe its shape.
  1. 1Most data are at the low end.
  2. 2The bars trail off in a long tail to the right.
Answer: Skewed right

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Naming the skew by where the data pile up

Wrong:Most data are on the left, so the histogram is skewed left.

Skew is named for the tail. If the tail stretches to the right, the data are skewed right.

Calling any high value an outlier

Wrong:In 3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, the 6 is an outlier.

An outlier is far from the rest of the data. 6 is right next to the other values.

Helpful Math Tip

Look at a histogram and ask your child to tell its "story": where most of the data are, and whether anything is unusual.
