Worked Example 1
All Four Measures
- 1Mean: (4 + 7 + 7 + 9 + 13) ÷ 5 = 40 ÷ 5 = 8
- 2Median: the middle value is 7. Mode: 7 appears twice.
- 3Range: 13 − 4 = 9

Students find and interpret the mean, median, mode, and range of a numerical data set in a real-world context.
Mean: add the values and divide by how many there are. Median: the middle value when the data are in order (with an even count, the mean of the two middle values). Mode: the most frequent value. Range: largest minus smallest.
Official benchmarkGiven a numerical data set within a real-world context, find and interpret mean, median, mode and range.
On the FAST test: part of the Grade 6 reporting category Geometric Reasoning, Data Analysis, and Probability, which is about 25–36% of the test.
Worked Example 1
Worked Example 2
Order first: 3, 6, 8, 10. The median is (6 + 8) ÷ 2 = 7.
There are 4 values: 60 ÷ 4 = 15.
Ask which measure best describes a "typical" value. When one value is far from the rest, the median is usually more representative than the mean.
