What Is Benchmark MA.6.AR.3.4?

Students use ratio reasoning to solve percent problems: finding the percent, the part, or the whole. The idea is that part/whole = percent/100.

For example, if a 340-gram shake has 34 grams of protein, then 34340 = 10100, so the shake is 10% protein.

Official benchmarkApply ratio relationships to solve mathematical and real-world problems involving percentages using the relationship between two quantities.

On the FAST test: part of the Grade 6 reporting category Algebraic Reasoning, which is about 25–36% of the test.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Finding the Part

What is 30% of 80?
  1. 130% = 30100
  2. 230100 × 80 = 24
Answer: 24

Worked Example 2

Finding the Percent and the Whole

18 is what percent of 24? And 15 is 25% of what number?
  1. 11824 = 0.75 = 75%
  2. 2If 15 is 25%, then 15 is one fourth of the whole: 15 × 4 = 60
Answer: 75%; 60

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Dividing the whole by the part

Wrong:18 is what percent of 24: 24 ÷ 18

Divide the part by the whole: 18 ÷ 24 = 0.75 = 75%.

Dividing by the percent number

Wrong:30% of 80 = 80 ÷ 30

Multiply by the percent as a fraction or decimal: 0.3 × 80 = 24.

Helpful Math Tip

Use 10% as a building block: 10% of 80 is 8, so 30% is 3 × 8 = 24. It works for tips and discounts too.
