What Is Benchmark MA.6.AR.3.2?

A rate is a ratio of two quantities with different units, like 150 miles in 3 hours. A unit rate tells the amount for 1 unit, like 50 miles per hour.

To find a unit rate, divide the first quantity by the second. For example, 500 words in 3 minutes is 5003 = 16623 words per minute. Problems do not convert between customary and metric units.

Official benchmarkGiven a real-world context, determine a rate for a ratio of quantities with different units. Calculate and interpret the corresponding unit rate.

On the FAST test: part of the Grade 6 reporting category Algebraic Reasoning, which is about 25–36% of the test.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Price per Pound

3 pounds of apples cost $4.50. What is the price per pound?
  1. 1Divide the cost by the pounds: 4.50 ÷ 3 = 1.5
Answer: $1.50 per pound

Worked Example 2

Speed

A car travels 150 miles in 2.5 hours. What is its unit rate?
  1. 1Divide miles by hours: 150 ÷ 2.5 = 60
Answer: 60 miles per hour

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Dividing in the wrong order

Wrong:$4.50 for 3 pounds: 3 ÷ 4.50

For dollars per pound, divide dollars by pounds: 4.50 ÷ 3 = $1.50 per pound.

Leaving out the units

Wrong:The unit rate is 60.

Say what it measures: 60 miles per hour.

Helpful Math Tip

Compare prices at the store using unit prices, like cents per ounce, to decide which size is the better buy.
