Worked Example 1
Undoing Addition
- 1Subtract 15 from both sides: x = 6 − 15
- 26 − 15 = −9

Created by a Florida mom · Published by Tropical Learning LLC
Students write and solve one-step equations that use addition or subtraction, such as x + p = q, where all the numbers and solutions are integers. The variable can be on either side of the equal sign.
Use the inverse operation to get the variable alone: subtract to undo addition, and add to undo subtraction. Always do the same thing to both sides.
Official benchmarkWrite and solve one-step equations in one variable within a mathematical or real-world context using addition and subtraction, where all terms and solutions are integers.
On the FAST test: part of the Grade 6 reporting category Algebraic Reasoning, which is about 25–36% of the test.
Worked Example 1
Worked Example 2
Undo adding 15 by subtracting 15: x = 6 − 15 = −9.
Add 8 to both sides: x = −3 + 8 = 5.
Check every answer by substituting it back into the original equation.
