What Is Benchmark MA.5.NSO.1.5?

In Grade 5, students round decimals with up to three decimal places to the nearest hundredth, tenth, or whole number.

The key idea: find the place you are rounding to, then look only at the digit just to its right. If that digit is 5 or more, round up; if it is 4 or less, keep the digit the same.

Official benchmarkRound multi-digit numbers with decimals to the thousandths to the nearest hundredth, tenth or whole number.

On the FAST test: part of the Grade 5 reporting category Number Sense and Operations with Whole Numbers, which is about 23–29% of the test.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Rounding to the Nearest Tenth

3.476
  1. 1The tenths digit is 4.
  2. 2Look at the next digit (hundredths): 7.
  3. 37 is 5 or more, so round up to 3.5.
Answer: 3.5

Worked Example 2

Rounding to the Nearest Hundredth

2.465
  1. 1The hundredths digit is 6.
  2. 2Look at the thousandths digit: 5.
  3. 35 rounds up, so 2.465 becomes 2.47.
Answer: 2.47

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Rounding one digit at a time

Wrong:2.445 → 2.45 → 2.5

Look only at the digit right after the rounding place. To the nearest tenth, 2.445 has a 4 in the hundredths place, so it rounds to 2.4.

Looking at the wrong digit

Wrong:6.83 to the nearest tenth = 7

To the nearest tenth, keep one decimal place and look at the hundredths: 3 rounds down, so 6.83 → 6.8.

Helpful Math Tip

Underline the digit in the place you are rounding to and circle the digit to its right. Only the circled digit decides up or down.
