In Grade 5, students solve real-world problems that divide a unit fraction by a whole number (sharing a fraction) or a whole number by a unit fraction (finding how many fraction-sized pieces fit).
Sharing 12 of a pizza among 3 friends gives each a smaller piece (16). Finding how many 13-cup servings are in 4 cups gives a bigger number (12).
Official benchmarkSolve real-world problems involving division of a unit fraction by a whole number and a whole number by a unit fraction.

Worked Example 1
Worked Example 2
The question asks how many 13-cup servings fit in 4 cups, so the answer must be more than 4: 12.
Sharing makes each piece smaller: 12 ÷ 3 = 16.
Ask whether the answer should be bigger or smaller than the starting amount. Sharing a fraction gives smaller pieces; counting fraction-sized pieces gives a bigger count.
