What Is Benchmark MA.3.FR.1.1?

A unit fraction has 1 on top, like 14. It is one part when a whole is split into equal parts. 14 is one of 4 equal parts.

Students show unit fractions as part of a shape, part of a set, and a point on a number line. In Grade 3, denominators are 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12.

Official benchmarkRepresent and interpret unit fractions in the form 1/n as the quantity formed by one part when a whole is partitioned into n equal parts.

On the FAST test: part of the Grade 3 reporting category Fractional Reasoning, which is about 23–29% of the test.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Part of a Shape

A pizza is cut into 6 equal slices. What fraction of the pizza is one slice?
  1. 1The whole pizza is split into 6 equal parts.
  2. 2One slice is 1 of the 6 equal parts.
Answer: 16

Worked Example 2

On a Number Line

A number line from 0 to 1 is split into 4 equal parts. What fraction is at the first mark after 0?
  1. 1The distance from 0 to 1 is the whole.
  2. 2It is split into 4 equal parts, so each part is 14.
  3. 3The first mark after 0 is one part from 0.
Answer: 14

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Calling unequal parts fractions

Wrong:A rectangle is cut into 3 different-sized pieces, so each piece is 13.

Thirds must be equal. If the parts are not the same size, a part is not 13 of the whole.

Thinking a bigger denominator means a bigger fraction

Wrong:18 > 14

The more equal parts the whole is cut into, the smaller each part: 18 < 14.

Helpful Math Tip

Fold paper strips into 2, 4, and 8 equal parts and line them up. Seeing that 18 is the smallest piece helps fix the "bigger denominator" mix-up.
