By the end of Grade 2, students should know addition facts with sums up to 20, and the related subtraction facts, quickly and without counting on their fingers.
Strategies help them get there: making a ten (8 + 5 = 8 + 2 + 3), doubles and near doubles (6 + 7 is one more than 6 + 6), and using an addition fact to solve subtraction.
Official benchmarkRecall addition facts with sums to 20 and related subtraction facts with automaticity.
How it is tested: Grade 2 students take FAST Star Math, Florida's math test for Kindergarten through Grade 2.

Worked Example 2
Start counting after 9: 10, 11, 12, 13. So 9 + 4 = 13.
Use the related addition fact: 9 + 8 = 17, so 17 − 9 = 8.
Practice a few facts each day for a couple of minutes, mixing addition with the matching subtraction (7 + 6 = 13, 13 − 6 = 7). Short, regular practice builds speed better than one long session.
Help your child build math confidence with original interactive questions aligned with Florida's B.E.S.T. Mathematics Standards.
