What Is Benchmark MA.1.NSO.2.4?

Children explore adding a two-digit number and a one-digit number, with sums up to 100, using objects, number lines, and drawings.

Sometimes the ones make a new ten. For 47 + 6, the 7 ones and 6 ones make 13 ones, which is 1 ten and 3 ones, so the answer is 53.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

No New Ten

34 + 5
  1. 1Add the ones: 4 + 5 = 9
  2. 2The 3 tens stay the same: 34 + 5 = 39
Answer: 39

Worked Example 2

Making a New Ten

47 + 6
  1. 1Break 6 into 3 and 3.
  2. 247 + 3 = 50
  3. 350 + 3 = 53
Answer: 53

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Adding the ones to the tens

Wrong:34 + 5 = 84

5 is 5 ones, so add it to the 4 ones: 34 + 5 = 39.

Writing the ones without making a new ten

Wrong:47 + 6 = 413

7 + 6 = 13 ones, which is 1 ten and 3 ones. 4 tens + 1 ten = 5 tens, so the answer is 53.

Helpful Math Tip

Jump on a number line: for 47 + 6, jump to the next ten (50), then jump the rest (3 more to 53).
