What Is Benchmark MA.1.DP.1.2?

Children read tally charts and pictographs to find the total number of data points (by adding) and to compare categories (by subtracting).

Typical questions: How many in all? Which has the most or the least? How many more?

Official benchmarkInterpret data represented with tally marks or pictographs by calculating the total number of data points and comparing the totals of different categories.

How it is tested: Grade 1 students take FAST Star Math, Florida's math test for Kindergarten through Grade 2.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

How Many in All?

A tally chart shows 6 votes for red and 9 votes for blue. How many votes are there in all?
  1. 1Add the two categories.
  2. 26 + 9 = 15
Answer: 15 votes

Worked Example 2

How Many More?

Using the same chart, how many more votes did blue get than red?
  1. 1Compare by subtracting.
  2. 29 − 6 = 3
Answer: 3 more votes

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Counting a tally bundle as 1

Wrong:A bundle and 2 more marks is 3.

Each bundle is 5: a bundle and 2 more marks is 5 + 2 = 7.

Adding when the question asks how many more

Wrong:Blue got 9 + 6 = 15 more votes than red.

"How many more" compares two amounts: 9 − 6 = 3.

Helpful Math Tip

After making a chart together, ask three questions: Which has the most? How many in all? How many more?
